Cascais, Quatorres (18 May 2024) — In a significant move towards upgrading its public transportation infrastructure, the Quatorres government, through its state-owned entity Infraestruturas Oeirenses, has signed a substantial deal valued at 55 million TB$ with Alstom for the acquisition of 20 sets of the latest 550 series electric passenger trains. These state-of-the-art trains are earmarked for the busy Cascais Line, a vital commuter route that has long been in need of modernization.
The Alstom 550 series trains are renowned for their cutting-edge technology, energy efficiency, and enhanced passenger comfort. Their introduction is part of the government's ambitious megaplan to overhaul the Cascais Line, which has been struggling with outdated infrastructure and severe overcrowding. These new trains promise to provide a more reliable and comfortable travel experience for commuters, significantly reducing congestion during peak hours.
Minister of Transportation, Ana Rodrigues, emphasized the importance of this acquisition in a recent press statement. "The introduction of the Alstom 550 series trains marks a transformative step in our efforts to rejuvenate the Cascais Line. This investment not only enhances the daily commute for thousands of passengers but also aligns with our broader goals of sustainability and modernization in public transport."
In addition to the new train sets, the government has also committed 2.5 million TB$ towards extensive renovations at the Cascais and Cruz Quebrada terminus stations. These renovations are already underway, aiming to improve the infrastructure, accessibility, and overall aesthetics of the stations. The upgrades will include modernized platforms, improved passenger information systems, and enhanced safety features.
The Cascais Line, which serves as a critical link for residents commuting to Nova Oeiras, has seen a steady increase in passenger numbers over the years. However, the aging trains and infrastructure have struggled to keep up with demand. The introduction of the Alstom 550 series trains, along with the station renovations, is expected to significantly enhance the operational efficiency and service quality of the line.
Alstom, a global leader in rail transport solutions, has expressed its enthusiasm for the partnership. In a statement, Alstom’s regional director for Southern Europe, Miguel Garcia, said, "We are delighted to support Quatorres in their vision for a modern and efficient rail network. The 550 series trains are designed to meet the highest standards of performance and passenger comfort, and we are confident they will serve the Cascais Line exceptionally well."
The government's megaplan reflects a broader commitment to investing in public transport infrastructure, aiming to make it more sustainable, efficient, and user-friendly. As the renovations progress and the new trains are rolled out, residents and commuters can look forward to a significantly improved travel experience on the Cascais Line.
The first sets of the Alstom 550 series trains are expected to be operational by early 2025, with full deployment anticipated by mid-2026. This strategic investment is poised to transform the Cascais Line, ensuring it meets the growing demands of modern urban mobility.
